Bad Moon Rising

Moon spider silk was a precious commodity, it turned out. After Kira found a batch, we decided to go together. Just like old times. Her, me, Slash, and Lady Sparklehoof.

I’d probably inspired the conversation when I used up the last of the silk, combined with the not-so-subtle fireside rant of the night before. A thing that had to be said to keep everyone focused on the new leadership. We had to move forward. I’d done what I could for them. Backsliding wasn’t allowed. It’d only cause problems and distract me from my mission.

We set out early. Slash walked sleepily beside me as we readied Lady Sparklehoof. Once I’d saddled her, I set him its cradle and he curled into a ball. In the way only dogs seemed to manage, he’d fallen asleep before we were away from the hamlet. Kira wanted to clear the air about what happened at the campfire. Turned out we were on the same page. She appreciated the discourse between the alliance members and the slow and steady growth led by Tonia, along with our reduced role in it. She agreed we couldn’t tell anyone the truth of what we faced. Sariel worried her, just as my friend’s guide worried me.

“So, I just wanted to let you know I support your direction,” Kira said as she faced the copse of trees on the other side of the creek. Though they were in full bloom, moon spider silk wrapped them in wide nets. “It’s better. You know. In the alliance.”

“Yeah.” I scanned the grayish webbing that wrapped around trees. Each was thirty feet in diameter. “It’s the right way forward.”

“Tonia is good. She’ll get them all in the same direction.”

“She will. I stopped to see her this morning. Told her where to look for me in case she needed something but also told her to keep Terry busy with the minions. He’s a great guy, but he’s treating them like kittens instead of workers.”

“I’m sure she’s heard a little of the chat from last night.”

“Probably,” Slash said groggily, lifting his head to look past Lady Sparklehoof. His snout ripple at the web-covered trees. “Those are gross. Hope you don’t have to fight gigantic spiders or something.”

“That’s why we only brought back the silk we had last time,” Kira said, cocking her head. “One spider did that.” She wiggled her finger at the massive web. “All that. We hurt it. Now that we know it’s there, it won’t get the element of surprise.”

“Hope you’re right.” With the silk already added to my armor via the red cloth, I’d equipped myself with the spider’s own magic. A neutralizing factor. “Let me take the lead.”

“Wouldn’t have it any other way,” Slash said. He sat back, lifting a paw to the tree on the right of the copse. “It’s in that one, right there.”

“Can you get a bead on it, Kira?”

She analyzed the spot, pulled out her bow, and nocked an arrow. A plain one. No poison for a probably poisonous creature.
